25 Feb 2017

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in cooperation with Isa Cultural Center and sponsored by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (GPIC), organized a symposium on “Human Rights and the Environment”, which was held in conjunction with the inauguration of Bahrain International Garden Show under the royal sponsorship of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, and the royal support of Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of the king, through which the audience is briefed on the ideal methods that contribute to the conservation of environmental resources.

On the sidelines of the symposium, NIHR Chairperson Dr. Abdul-Aziz Hassan Abul said, “This symposium comes within NIHR’s strategy and action plan”.  He emphasized that the protection of human rights is not limited to the protection of civil and political rights only but extends to include the right to a clean, safe and healthy environment, which is an essential part of the full practicing of human rights, being connected basically to human rights issues especially with regard to sustained development.

He added, “The NIHR works hard to make individuals aware of the fundamental rights guaranteed to them under national legislations and international conventions”.  He expressed his hope that the NIHR would achieve the desired objectives in dissemination, enhancement and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth mentioning that the symposium was divided into two session.  The first session dealt with three themes that discussed “the legal, administrative and judicial mechanisms of environment protection”, spoken by President of the Grand Criminal Court HE Judge Ibrahim Al-Zayed, Chief Executive Officer of the Supreme Council for the Environment HE Dr. Mohamed Bin Deena and Professor of the General Criminal Law at the Police Royal Academy HE Dr. Mohamed Kotob.  The second session dealt with other three themes that discussed “the social responsibility for fostering the culture of environment protection”, spoken by member of Muharraq Municipal Council Mr. Ghazi Al-Merbati, GPIC Technical Services Director Eng. Khalid Al-Benali and the Environmental Expert Dr. Shebr Al-Wadaee.
